Why do women hate cat calls so much?

This is a serious question, I’ve seen a lot of backlash against them and I would like to know the reason.

A cat call is a quick way of saying “Girl u lookin fine”. Personally, if I a group of random girls told me how fine I looked I would stand taller and feel better about myself throughout the rest of the day

From what I have gathered up, it seems to be offensive because it degrades women. But I don’t get it. The men who cat call aren’t trying to degrade you, they are simply appreciating your looks.

I am probably entirely wrong, that’s why I am asking you now.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could clarify this for me. If you need a lot of space to write out a long answer, send me a message and I will open up my submit box.

Why do women find cat calls offensive?

Because it’s disrespectful. There is a BIG difference between being friendly/complementing somebody, and catcalling.

Complements are kind. They are the sort that you get when elderly women come up to you in the grocery store and tell you that they love your hair, or when another woman appreciates the bitchin’ shoes you have on. It is meant and clearly exhibits good will and neutral intent. There is nothing wrong with a similar expression coming from a man.

Catcalls is an exertion of power. And men know this. It is done with non-neutral intent, whether it be to hurt a woman or to get laid. If catcalls were a good thing, why would men feel it necessary to shoot it at a girl after she’s already passed them, from a car on the street, from a group of men? They need to set up barriers between themselves and the target of the objectification because they know that it is not okay, because it is not respect. It’s not a complement or an appreciation, it’s a reduction, it’s a statement of possession. How is “NICE TITS” a complement?!

It’s a threat.

It is a precursor to things that are a whole lot worse. Rape, kidnapping, murder. If I am alone and a man catcalls/wolf whistles in my direction, I will remove myself from the situation as soon as humanely possible. It is frightening! That man has already established that he does not respect you or your body, so why wouldn’t he cross the line into rape? It’s intimidation, not appreciation.

TL;DR: Appreciation is face-on. Intimidation (catcalling) is from a distance. Appreciation is respectful and knows boundaries.

Haha, the idea that there’s a guy out there that doesn’t know that catcalling is about threatening woman makes me laugh and then want to punch something.

we have literally created our own dialogue? language? here on tumblr and i think that is the most amazing thing ever ~~please disregard my shitty editing skills~~

no listen this is actually really amazing because this is a real thing. i think this counts as a pidgin language. a pidgin language is basically a changed, simplified version of a language. you can change the spellings of words, pronunciation, grammar rules, or even make up new words. i think. i’d have to research it a bit more to be sure but i’m 90% sure this is right. if its not a pidgin language, then its a lingua franca but thats more used for trade and stuff like that. but still a new language. so yes, we’ve created our own language. we’ve changed the whole sentence structure. we can trail off sentences, say things like “i just cant”, and use words like ship, OTP, fic, fandom, feels, and ship names and everyone will understand what you’re saying. the part that i love most is how people go “OMGH IM CRIIY NIG SOIOO HARD” and understand each other. for example “IM LIUA GHMNIG”. that one was incredibly easy, but if you knew that said “I’m laughing”, congratulations. You speak a pidgin language. we can even say stuff like “Does anyone know of a Johnlock fic, at least 20k words, not a WIP, with no OCs, and is Post-Reichenbach? Or just a Destiel PWP would be great.” To someone not on tumblr, that wouldn’t make any sense. but you understood, didn’t you? One characteristic of a pidgin language is that you have to learn it like a second language. Another characteristic is that it is frequently changing. tumblr goes through many trends with how we talk. if i remember correctly, when i first made an account about two years ago, talking like this wasn’t quite as common. also, that thing of suddenly capitalizing your sentence is fairly recent. you know, when people go “the new epISODE IS TOMORROW”. Like one of the people up there said, all of this is awesome because how else do you easily show emotion and tone over the internet? we’ve even made a whole sense of humour that most people here share in. There’s so much more that I could talk about with this, but i’m tired and i may be entirely wrong about everything. but yes. people on the fandom side of tumblr who speak like this are speaking a new language

they look at you funny. 99% confused, 1% amazed. And then that one percent of them blurts really awkwardly “I LIKE YOUR SHOELACES”

I wish people wouldn’t just see me as the Asian girl who beats everyone up, or the Asian girl with no emotion. People see Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock in a romantic comedy, but not me. You add race to it, and it became, ‘Well she’s too Asian’, or ‘She’s too American’. I kind of got pushed out of both categories. It’s a very strange place to be. You’re not Asian enough and then you’re not American enough.
